An extraordinarily atmospheric Taoist-Buddhist sanctuary built in 1909 by the Cantonese community in District 1. Dedicated to the supreme Jade Emperor Ngoc Hoang, the temple is shrouded in dense fragrant clouds of hanging spiral incense. Elaborate Cantonese wood carvings and fearsome papier-mâché guardian figures adorn the altars, while a courtyard pond filled with turtles gives the site its nickname, the Tortoise Pagoda.
