Verona's oldest surviving bridge crosses the Adige River near the Roman Theatre, originally constructed in stone in 89 BC as Pons Marmoreus. The five-arch crossing showcases an intriguing patchwork of ancient Roman white limestone arches alongside medieval red brick additions built by the Scaliger and Venetian rulers. Reconstructed from riverbed rubble after World War II, it now serves as a scenic pedestrian walkway with hill views.

Highlights

  • Verona's oldest Roman monument, dating back to the 1st century BC
  • Fascinating blend of white Roman limestone and medieval red brickwork
  • Picturesque pedestrian crossing with views of Castel San Pietro hill
