Pl. del Triunfo

≈ 15 min

This central location includes three of Seville's World Heritage sites: the Real Alcázar, the General Archive of the Indies, and the cathedral with its Giralda, a bell tower more than 90 meters high with fantastic views over the entire city. The cathedral, the largest Gothic temple in the world, is also the final resting place of Christopher Columbus. It is at least partly responsible for the existence of another symbol of Seville: the General Archive of the Indies. Once the archive of the colonies, at the height of the Spanish empire this building was the point of entry for merchants and their goods arriving from the Americas. You will likely pass by the Plaza del Triunfo while exploring Seville Cathedral, but it is worth taking the time to simply enjoy this square while you are here. It is said that the square is called Plaza del Triunfo (Square of Triumph) because on 1 November 1755 a very strong earthquake occurred in Lisbon, which was felt throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Many buildings collapsed and many people died, yet the church remained completely undamaged, and everyone who was praying in it that day was safe.
