The General Archive of the Indies holds Spain's papers from its American empire and is a UNESCO World Heritage site together with the cathedral and the Alcazar. The building went up in the late 16th century as a merchants' exchange to Juan de Herrera's design, and the archive moved in under Charles III in 1785. Among the papers are documents of Columbus and the conquistadors. Visitors can enter the exhibition halls and grand staircase for free.
