Kuala Lumpur's historic Independence Square, where at midnight on 31 August 1957 the Union Jack was lowered and the Malayan flag raised for the first time. The national banner still flies atop a 95-metre flagpole, one of the world's tallest. The square faces the 1897 Sultan Abdul Samad Building, renowned for its Moorish arches, copper domes, and 41-metre clock tower. Surrounded by colonial heritage, the open public lawns are free to visit.
