A Byzantine fortress on the north-eastern hill of Thessaloniki's Upper Town. The core walls were raised under Emperor Theodosius I in the late 4th century; in Ottoman times the fort grew to seven towers and was nicknamed Yedi Kule — "seven towers". For decades it served as a prison, closed only in 1989. Today people climb here for panoramas of Thessaloniki and the Thermaic Gulf and for walks around Ano Poli.
