Established in 1872, this is Finland's oldest professional Finnish-language drama institution. Its commanding headquarters on Railway Square was designed by Onni Tarjanne in National Romantic style and opened in 1902. Resembling a medieval granite fortress with red-tiled turrets and sculpted relief ornamentation, the theatre faces the bronze monument to author Aleksis Kivi and stages renowned classic and contemporary plays.
