The Church of Saint Demetrius is the principal sanctuary of Thessaloniki and a UNESCO World Heritage site dedicated to the city's patron saint. Dating back to the 4th to 7th centuries, this five-aisled basilica boasts rare early Byzantine mosaics depicting Saint Demetrius with children and town officials. Beneath the altar lies an underground Roman bathhouse crypt where Saint Demetrius was imprisoned and martyred in the 4th century.
