The Church of the "Stavropoleos" Monastery

Sight4.8 · 6 2974.6 · 2 958≈ 28 minFree entry576 m from the center

A tiny church of 1724 in Bucharest's historic centre, built by the Greek monk Ioannikios Stratonikeas beside his inn. The style is Brancovenesc: delicate stone carving on the facade, an arcade portico, frescoes and a carved iconostasis. Under the portico sit rescued fragments of demolished churches — tombstones, icons and early printed books. Only the church survives today, yet it remains one of the Old Town's most atmospheric spots.
