Venice's crown cathedral and the pinnacle of Byzantine architecture in Western Europe, consecrated in 1094 as the Doge's private chapel. Nicknamed the Church of Gold, its cavernous vaults and domes are blanketed by over 8,000 square metres of shimmering gold-ground mosaics. Highlights include the relics of Saint Mark the Evangelist, the gem-encrusted Pala d'Oro altarpiece, and the four Roman bronze horses overlooking Saint Mark's Square.
