An iconic enclosed bridge of white Istrian stone spanning the Rio di Palazzo canal in the heart of Venice. Designed by Antonio Contino around 1600, it connected the interrogation rooms inside the Doge's Palace directly with the New Prison cells. Lord Byron popularized the romantic name, evoking the sighs of condemned prisoners catching their very last glimpse of Venice and the lagoon through stone-latticed windows.
