Ruin bars are Budapest's signature phenomenon: bars opened since the 2000s in derelict pre-war buildings of the Jewish Quarter. The first and most famous is Szimpla Kert on Kazinczy Street, a former factory courtyard filled with retro furniture, graffiti and string lights. Today they number in the dozens, from cosy Csendes to the giant Instant-Fogas complex. By day cafes and art spaces, by night the city's main party; entry is nearly always free.
