Commissioned by Napoleon, the Pont de Pierre was the first stone bridge built across the Garonne in Bordeaux, opening in 1822. Designed by engineer Claude Deschamps, the masonry bridge spans 17 arches, matching the 17 letters in the name 'Napoléon Bonaparte'. Decorated with elegant medallion reliefs of the emperor and the city crest, the span is now reserved exclusively for pedestrians, cyclists, and trams.
