Renaissance city gates 35 metres tall, raised in 1494-1496 to celebrate King Charles VIII's Italian campaign. An odd mixture of Gothic and Renaissance: pointed turrets, carved scallop shells and grinning gargoyles. Inside is a small exhibition on medieval Bordeaux, and a narrow spiral staircase climbs to a viewing platform over the Garonne and the old town's rooftops. The gates once opened straight onto the river; today they face Place du Palais.
