Located in Nice's Old Town just steps from the seafront, the Opéra de Nice opened in 1885 with Verdi's Aida, replacing the theater destroyed by fire. Designed by architect François Aune, the grand Italianate auditorium features gilded tiers, ornate plasterwork, and an allegorical ceiling painted by Emmanuel Costa. The venue serves as the primary home for both the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ballet Nice Méditerranée.
