Nanzen-ji is one of Kyoto's most important Zen Buddhist temple complexes, founded in the late 13th century at the base of the forested Higashiyama mountains. The site is famous for its colossal wooden Sanmon gate, the picturesque Meiji-era red-brick Suirokaku aqueduct, and refined karesansui rock gardens in the Hojo hall. In autumn, the sprawling grounds become one of the city's premier locations for viewing brilliant red maples.
