Eikando, formally Zenrin-ji, is the head temple of a branch of the Jodo school, founded in the ninth century at the foot of Mount Daimonji. It is famous for the Mikaeri Amida statue, a Buddha that seems to glance back over its shoulder at worshippers. Eikando is regarded as Kyoto's finest spot for autumn maples: thousands of trees line the paths and reflect in the pond by the Tahoto pagoda. In season, lanterns light the garden after dark.
