Greece's leading museum of Byzantine art opened in 1994 beside the Archaeological Museum. Eleven galleries lead from early Christian times to late Byzantium: icons, frescoes, mosaics, tombs and grave goods, church plate and scale models of Thessaloniki's famous churches. A separate theme presents the city as the empire's second capital. Winter hours end at 15:30, so plan your visit for the morning.
