A masterpiece of Portuguese Manueline architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site in Belém, built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's voyage to India. Founded by King Manuel I in 1501 and funded by the spice trade, the complex features a breathtaking two-storey cloister decorated with delicate stone carvings of nautical ropes and corals. The church of Santa Maria holds the tombs of Vasco da Gama and poet Luís de Camões.
