Kyoto most important Shinto shrine, dedicated to Inari, the deity of agriculture, business, and prosperity, founded in AD 711. The shrine is internationally famous for its Senbon Torii path: thousands of vermilion gates winding up the sacred Mount Inari through dense cedar forest. Fox statues (kitsune), regarded as Inari messengers, dot the grounds carrying symbolic scrolls or jewels.
