Founded in 1236, Tofuku-ji is one of Kyoto's premier Rinzai Zen temples, celebrated for historic architecture and groundbreaking landscape art. Its monumental Sanmon gate is the oldest Zen main gate in Japan. The temple is famed worldwide for the modernist dry rock gardens created by Mirei Shigemori, including a striking checkerboard moss garden, and Tsutenkyo Bridge overlooking a gorge filled with flaming autumn maples.
