Austria's national theatre on the Ringstraße boulevard, founded in 1741 by Empress Maria Theresa. Known affectionately as "Die Burg", it stands as one of the world's most prestigious German-language theatres. The current Neo-Baroque landmark, designed by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer, opened in 1888 and is celebrated for the breathtaking ceiling frescoes on its grand staircases painted by Gustav Klimt.
