The historic core of Serbia's capital, set on a cliff overlooking the strategic confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. With roots dating back to Roman Singidunum, the fortress survived over a hundred battles under Byzantine, Ottoman, and Austrian rule. Its iconic landmark is Ivan Meštrović's 1928 bronze Victor Monument (Pobednik) on the Upper Town plateau. Moats feature tanks from the Military Museum. The fortress park is free to enter.
