The symbol of Zemun — a stone tower on the Gardoš hill raised in 1896 for the Hungarian millennium, also called the Millennium Tower or Janos Hunyadi Tower. A staircase climbs to the upper level, with views over the Danube, Zemun's rooftops and Belgrade's distant skyline. Around it lie an old Zemun cemetery with 19th-century tombstones and a café terrace; sunsets here rank among the city's best.

Avala
1 h 8 min

Mount Avala, south of Belgrade, is the city's favourite escape: forest trails, Ivan Meštrović's Monument to the Unknown Hero ringed by caryatid figures, and a TV tower over 200 metres tall that was destroyed in 1999 and rebuilt. On clear days the view from the top reaches all the way toward the Pannonian plain.

Bajrakli Mosque
32 min

The Bajrakli Mosque is the only surviving active Islamic place of worship in Belgrade out of hundreds that stood during the Ottoman era. Built around 1575 in the historic Dorćol quarter, it features single-domed stone masonry resting on an octagonal drum and a slender stone minaret. Its name derives from the Turkish word bayrak (flag), as a flag was raised on the minaret to signal the call to prayer simultaneously across all city mosques.

One of Belgrade's oldest markets - trading since 1847 - sheltered by a stern concrete canopy of Yugoslav modernism. Stalls pile high with house-made kajmak, cheeses, plum rakia, seasonal fruit and greens trucked in from southern Serbia. Bakeries around the edge sell burek and warm kiflice rolls, and the crowd mixes everyday shoppers with restaurant buyers. Mornings are the time to come; the rows thin out after midday.
