One of the oldest monastic settlements in France, founded by John Cassian in the 5th century overlooking the Old Port of Marseille. Fortified in the Middle Ages with crenellated stone towers, the abbey resembles a medieval fortress. Visitors descend into atmospheric subterranean crypts housing early Christian sarcophagi, catacombs, and a venerated Black Madonna statue. Entry to the upper church is free.
