The old harbour where Marseille began: Greek settlers from Phocaea landed here around 600 BC and founded Massalia. Today it is a broad marina of fishing boats, and every morning the catch is sold straight off the quayside. Fort Saint-Jean and Fort Saint-Nicolas guard the entrance, Notre-Dame de la Garde rises above the rooftops and the old Le Panier quarter clings to the northern shore. A circuit of the quays is the best introduction to the city.
