A verdant island in Mumbai Harbour, historically called Gharapuri and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is renowned for the Elephanta Caves — rock-cut Hindu temple sanctuaries carved from solid basalt between the 5th and 8th centuries. The centerpiece of Cave 1 is the monumental six-metre-high Trimurti sculpture of Sadashiva, depicting the three divine aspects of Shiva as creator, preserver, and destroyer.
