A rock-cut temple sanctuary dating from the 5th to 8th centuries on Elephanta Island in Mumbai Harbour, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carved directly out of solid basalt rock, the subterranean halls are dedicated to Lord Shiva. The undisputed masterwork in the Great Cave is the monumental 6-metre Trimurti bust, representing Shiva in his threefold aspects as creator, preserver, and destroyer of the cosmos.
