An iconic enclosed bridge of white Istrian stone spanning the Rio di Palazzo canal in the heart of Venice. Designed by Antonio Contino around 1600, it connected the interrogation rooms inside the Doge's Palace directly with the New Prison cells. Lord Byron popularized the romantic name, evoking the sighs of condemned prisoners catching their very last glimpse of Venice and the lagoon through stone-latticed windows.

Highlights

  • Baroque masterpiece built of white Istrian limestone
  • Best view from the nearby Ponte della Paglia
  • Stone mascarons carved along the canal facade
  • Byronic legend of prisoners' final sighs of freedom
