The library was built by Emperor Hadrian around 132 AD next to Athens' Roman Agora. A rectangular courtyard with colonnades surrounded reading halls and a papyrus store; later churches rose inside the court, and in Ottoman times it became a bazaar. The best-preserved part is the west propylon with seven Corinthian columns. The ruins by Monastiraki square are lit up at night.
