Constructed in the late 1st century BC with funds provided by Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus, this ancient marketplace served as the commercial hub of Roman Athens. The archaeological site features the monumental marble Gate of Athena Archegetis with four Doric columns and the remarkable Tower of the Winds, an octagonal marble clocktower that functioned as a sundial, weather vane, and water clock. Ruins of Roman porticoes dot the grounds.
