The lavish landscaped palace of Roman Emperor Nero, erected on the Oppian Hill after the Great Fire of Rome in AD 64. Hidden beneath modern parkland, its subterranean chambers preserve the pioneering octagonal vaulted hall and colourful frescoes by the painter Fabullus, which inspired Renaissance masters to coin the term 'grotesque'. Immersive weekend guided tours feature VR headsets depicting its original marble splendor.
