Basilica of San Clemente

Religious site4.7 · 7 8804.7 · 4 444≈ 1 hFree entry2.1 km from the center

A basilica like a set of nesting layers: the 12th-century upper church with golden apse mosaics sits above a 4th-century early Christian basilica, and below lie a 1st-century Roman house and a Mithraeum — a vertical slice of twenty centuries of Roman history. Entry to the upper church is free; the lower levels are paid, visited with an audioguide. It sits five minutes from the Colosseum.

Highlights

  • Three historical layers: 12th century, 4th century and antiquity
  • Golden apse mosaic in the upper church
  • Mithraeum with an altar to Mithras on the lowest level
  • A five-minute walk from the Colosseum
