Ljubljana's principal Catholic cathedral was erected between 1701 and 1706 to Baroque designs by Italian Jesuit architect Andrea Pozzo. Inside, the church dazzles with masterly illusionistic ceiling frescoes by Giulio Quaglio and an octagonal dome added in 1841. The exterior is famous for two sculpted bronze doors created in 1996 for Pope John Paul II's visit, depicting the religious history of Slovenia.
