Housed in the former Stadhuis of Batavia on Fatahillah Square, this prominent museum chronicles the capital's heritage from prehistoric times to independence. Completed in 1710 by the Dutch East India Company, the handsome colonial mansion was modeled after Amsterdam's royal palace. Inside, exhibits display antique teak furniture, historic nautical maps, ceremonial swords, colonial cannons, and grim underground water dungeon cells.
