A commanding medieval fortress guarding the edge of Bari Vecchia near the Adriatic Sea. Founded by Norman King Roger II around 1132, the citadel was rebuilt in 1233 by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen and later reinforced with bastions and a dry moat by Isabella of Aragon. Today, its vaulted stone halls house an extensive plaster-cast gallery of Apulian Romanesque architectural gems and archaeological exhibits.
