The National Gallery of Bulgaria occupies the former royal palace in the heart of Sofia, built in the early 1880s by the Austrian architect Viktor Rumpelmayer for Prince Alexander I. Its state rooms now hold Bulgarian painting and sculpture of the 19th and 20th centuries, from National Revival masters to mid-century moderns. The gallery's modern wing, Kvadrat 500, lies a short walk away; Thursdays are cheaper at all branches.
