A small medieval church at the foot of Vitosha mountain, inscribed by UNESCO in 1979. Its fame rests on the frescoes of 1259, a summit of medieval Bulgarian painting with striking donor portraits of despot Kaloyan and his wife among vivid Gospel scenes. Entry is in small groups for just a few minutes, so the visit is brief but tickets are worth booking ahead. Combine it with the neighbouring National History Museum.
