One of the oldest surviving churches in the Balkans, constructed of red brick in the 6th century under Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. This historic basilica gave its name to Bulgaria's capital in the 14th century, which was previously known as Serdica. Beneath the church floor lies an ancient necropolis with Roman tombs and fine mosaics. Admission to the upper basilica is free of charge.
