Located in Lisbon's historic Belém district, the National Coach Museum preserves one of the world's foremost collections of historic royal and ceremonial carriages. Founded in 1905 by Queen Amélia, it displays lavishly gilded 16th- to 19th-century coaches used by Portuguese monarchs, European ambassadors, and popes. Exhibits span an ultra-modern pavilion designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha and the ornate historic Royal Riding Arena.
