Erected in the 1660s by order of Louis XIV, Fort Saint-Jean commands the entrance to Marseille's Old Port. The historic stronghold incorporates the 15th-century Tower of King René and a 17th-century lighthouse. Today, the fortress forms an open cultural hub connected by dramatic footbridges to the historic Le Panier district and the modern Mucem museum. Visitors can stroll along historic ramparts offering panoramic Mediterranean views.
