Croatia's chief church, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, stands on the site of a Gothic cathedral from the 13th century. After the devastating 1880 earthquake the church was rebuilt by Hermann Bollé, who crowned it with neo-Gothic towers 108 metres tall. Inside are stained glass, neo-Gothic altars and the tomb of Cardinal Stepinac. The 2020 quake struck again, leaving the spires without their tops for years.
