The only stadium in the world constructed entirely from white Pentelic marble. Originally built in the 4th century BC for the Panathenaic Games, it was meticulously restored to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Visitors can run around the historic horseshoe track, sit on the sun-warmed marble tiers, and pass through the vaulted athletes' tunnel to view an exhibition of historic Olympic torches.
A monumental ancient sanctuary in central Athens dedicated to the king of Olympian gods. Begun in the 6th century BC under tyrant Peisistratos, the colossal marble temple was only completed nearly 650 years later by Roman Emperor Hadrian in 131 AD. Originally boasting 104 towering Corinthian columns, fifteen majestic pillars still stand upright today alongside one dramatically fallen column, silhouetted against the sky.
The crown of the Athenian Acropolis and the pinnacle of classical Greek architecture, built between 447 and 432 BC by Ictinus and Callicrates under the sculptor Phidias. Dedicated to Athena Parthenos, the Pentelic marble temple incorporates subtle optical refinements, from swelling column entasis to upward curved stylobates. From the sacred rock, panoramas stretch across Athens to the Saronic Gulf and the Aegean Sea.
The ancient rocky citadel rising above Athens represents the high point of Classical Greek architecture from the 5th century BC. Commissioned by Pericles, it preserves the Parthenon, the Erechtheion with its famed Porch of the Caryatids, the temple of Athena Nike, and the Propylaea gateway, with sweeping vistas stretching toward the Saronic Gulf.

Carved into the southwest slope of the Acropolis, this open-air Roman theater was completed around 161 AD by wealthy Athenian benefactor Herodes Atticus in memory of his late wife Regilla. With a three-story marble facade and seating for 5,000 spectators, it was restored with white Pentelic marble in the 1950s. Today, it serves as the premier venue for the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, hosting legends like Maria Callas and Luciano Pavarotti.

In the shadow of the Acropolis and its ancient temples, hillside Plaka has a village feel, with narrow cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops selling jewelry, clothes and local ceramics. Sidewalk cafes and family-run tavernas stay open until late, and Cine Paris shows classic movies al fresco. Nearby, the whitewashed homes of the Anafiotika neighborhood give the small enclave a Greek-island vibe.

Inaugurated in 1975 along Vasilissis Sofias Avenue in central Athens, Greece's premier military museum traces the nation's martial heritage across four floors. Exhibits span antiquity, displaying Mycenaean weapons, classical armor, and Byzantine relics, alongside the 1821 War of Independence and WWII campaigns. An outdoor plaza features historic fighter aircraft including a Supermarine Spitfire and F-104 Starfighter, alongside artillery.
Located steps from the Acropolis, Athens by Bike is a top-rated cycling tour and rental hub exploring the Greek capital on two wheels. Guided tours on regular city bikes and comfortable e-bikes weave through historic pedestrian streets, scenic Plaka alleys, and whitewashed Anafiotika corners. Riders pass key landmarks including the Roman Agora, National Gardens, and the all-marble Panathenaic Stadium.
A private museum in the Pangrati district, opened in 2019 to house the Basil and Elise Goulandris collection, one of Europe's largest private holdings. Across four floors Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Picasso, Pollock, Giacometti and Bacon hang beside Greek modernists such as Tsarouchis, Ghikas and Paralis. An audio guide is included in the ticket. With its atrium and a Giacometti sculpture outside, the building itself is a landmark.
Kolonaki is a chic neighborhood known for its high-end shopping, featuring a mix of international labels, Greek designer boutiques, and trendy concept stores. The area also boasts a diverse dining scene with options ranging from global cuisines to modern Greek fare. At night, Kolonaki comes alive with stylish bars offering live jazz and DJ sets. For those seeking outdoor activities, trails and a funicular railway lead to the summit of Mt.
In short, the main activities include visiting the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum, strolling through the picturesque Plaka and Monastiraki, visiting the SNFCC, enjoying delicious dishes at good restaurants and taverns, swimming at the beaches of the Riviera, and taking a day trip to the Saronic islands, as well as a day tour to famous archaeological sites such as Delphi or Epidaurus. Before our trip to Athens, I didn't know what to expect. Is it a modern city? Is there much to do there?
A premier archaeological museum in Athens' Kolonaki district, established in 1986 by Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris. It is renowned for its world-class collection of Cycladic marble figurines from the 3rd millennium BC. Their minimalist silhouettes and folded arms deeply inspired 20th-century masters such as Picasso and Modigliani. The museum connects via a glass atrium to the neoclassical Stathatos Mansion.
A private museum on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue founded in 1930 by the collector Antonis Benakis. The exhibition walks through the whole history of Greek art: Cycladic figurines and ancient pottery, Byzantine icons, costumes, weapons and 19th- and 20th-century painting, up to works about the Asia Minor catastrophe of 1922. The rooftop cafe looks out over the National Garden towards Lycabettus Hill.
