Zojo-ji is the head Buddhist temple of the Jodo sect in the Kanto region, founded in the late 14th century and later chosen as the family temple of the Tokugawa shoguns. Six of the dynasty's rulers are buried in its mausoleum. Its majestic two-story wooden gate, Sangedatsumon, survived wartime bombings and dates back to 1622. The open plaza before the main hall provides one of the city's most iconic vistas framing Tokyo Tower behind it.
