Xintiandi is an upscale pedestrian shopping and dining district in the central Huangpu District. The area deserves attention for its preservation (and restoration) of old shikumen (stone gate) houses, most of which were demolished in other parts of the city. It is also the site of the First Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, so despite the glamour of Xintiandi, the place also has historical significance. Xintiandi is an incredibly popular district that was completely renovated and became the site of the first meeting of the National Communist Party. Today it is a cluster of landscaped streets designed after the model of traditional longtang alleys, with expensive restaurants, cafés, and boutiques.
