The 'House at Checkpoint Charlie', founded by human rights activist Rainer Hildebrandt soon after the Wall went up. Exhibitions on divided Berlin and the improbable engineering of escapes: hot-air balloons, homemade submarines, hideouts in cars and suitcases, stories of attempts that succeeded or failed. The checkpoint itself, with its sandbags and flags, is free to see outside.
