Tiananmen Square

One of the largest public squares on Earth — about 440,000 square metres at the heart of Beijing. Tiananmen Gate with Mao's portrait closes the north end, the Monument to the People's Heroes and Mao's mausoleum stand in the centre, and the Great Hall of the People and the National Museum flank the sides. A flag-raising ceremony is held at dawn; entry passes through security checks.
