The first stone palace of St Petersburg, built in the 1710s for Alexander Menshikov, Peter the Great's closest associate and the city's first governor. Its state rooms, with Dutch tiles and oak panelling, evoke the era of Peter's assemblies. Today the palace is a Hermitage branch displaying Dutch and Flemish art of the 17th century — paintings of the Dutch masters and decorative art.
