There is a legend about the origin of this district, in which, during the Heian period, many old items were discarded after Susuharai (the big house cleaning), and they became angry and turned into monsters to take revenge on people. These monsters marched through the street from west to east. Many years later, local residents and shop owners still celebrate the presence of these monsters by placing wooden monsters, which look just like garden ornaments, inside and outside their shops. Make sure to bring a camera to capture images of the imaginary little statues at the businesses! Why it's so great: Japanese culture is incredibly detailed and unusual, and this little street shows just how unique it is. It is a commercial street that celebrates local folklore, including yokai, strange creatures from Japanese legends.
