St. Peter's Church

Sight4.7 · 8 5704.6 · 4 257≈ 25 minFree entry222 m from the center

Vienna's most flamboyant Baroque church hides in a narrow lane off the Graben. The present building rose in 1701–1722 on the model of Rome's St Peter's; its oval dome carries a fresco by Johann Michael Rottmayr, and the interior glitters with gilded stucco and carved altars. Short organ and classical concerts are held here on most days, and entry to the church itself is free — step in from the bustle and look up.

Highlights

  • Baroque dome with a fresco by Rottmayr
  • Gilded altars and stucco of the early 1700s
  • Modelled on Rome's St Peter's Basilica
  • Regular organ and classical concerts
